Teaching Fellow, Psychology and Neuroscience – Augustana College

Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois

Augustana College invites applications for a full-time, Teaching Fellow position in the department of Psychology and Neuroscience  beginning August of 2021-2022 academic year, with possible renewal upon mutual agreement for the 2022-2023 academic year. Augustana College is a selective private liberal arts and sciences college of approximately 2,500 students, including 26 percent first generation college students, 23 percent Pell Grant students, 24 percent students of color, and 12 percent international students. Our beautifully wooded and largely residential campus is located in Rock Island, IL, a diverse Illinois-Iowa quad Cities metropolitan area along the Mississippi River with 400,000 residents about three hours west of Chicago. Strengthening our diverse and inclusive community is central to the college’s mission and strategic plan. We seek applicants with an interest in fostering rigorous, inclusive, and high-impact learning environments for a diverse student body.  Details about Augustana College, our expectations of the faculty, the selection process, and the Quad Cities all are available at Teaching at Augustana

Fellows may represent any specialization within psychology. The successful candidate will teach 24 credits per 10-month academic year (standard courses are 4 credits), which may include Introduction to Psychology, Statistics, Research Methods, a special topics course in the candidate's area of specialization, and an interdisciplinary course in the first year liberal arts sequence.

Our department is among the largest on campus and includes more than a dozen faculty with a range of specializations. We are a collegial group who support one another and our students.

We require no campus service (e.g., committee work, student advising, or admissions activity) from a Teaching Fellow, although fellows are welcome to become involved beyond their teaching as they are inclined. Similarly, although research is not required, Fellows have access to laboratory space and equipment and some have benefited from working with one or two students on a project. Fellows at Augustana are invited to receive support, mentoring, and training consistent with their needs throughout their appointment at the college.

Applicants with a PhD or who are ABD will be considered. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate teaching effectiveness, willingness to actively infuse multiple perspectives and critical thinking into pedagogy, experience and interest in working with students and community members of many backgrounds, commitment to fostering equity and inclusion, and interest in teaching in a liberal arts setting.

Augustana College is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Augustana College provides equal opportunity to all qualified employees and applicants without regard to race, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, veteran status, and any other category protected by federal, state, or local law.

A complete application includes a cover letter, curriculum vitae, copy of graduate transcripts, and a brief statement of teaching philosophy. Questions may be directed to the acting chair of the department, Mark Vincent, at markvincent@augustana.edu.  To guarantee full consideration, please submit all application materials by April 19, 2021.  The position will remain open until filled.
